Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- A pinch of fresh or dried herbs, such as thyme or rosemary
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- A small clove of garlic, finely chopped (optional, for garlic butter buns)
- Extra butter for toasting the buns
Instructions:
- Cook the Onions:
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter.
- Add the sliced onions and sugar, stirring occasionally. Cook for around 20-25 minutes until the onions turn golden brown and caramelized. If needed, add a bit of beef broth to deglaze the pan.
- Prepare the Burger Patties:
- Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to the ground beef for seasoning.
- Form the mixture into 4 evenly-sized patties.
- Cook the patties in a separate skillet or on a grill until they reach your desired level of doneness.
- Assemble the Burgers:
- For garlic butter buns, combine softened butter with finely chopped garlic, spread it onto the buns, and lightly toast them.
- Place a cooked burger patty on each bun’s bottom half and top it with a generous serving of caramelized onions and a slice of cheese.
- Melt the Cheese and Serve:
- Heat the burgers briefly to allow the cheese to melt. Add a sprinkle of herbs for extra flavor if desired.
- Close the burgers with the top buns and serve immediately.
